Marvin “Dean”

Swartzell, 91, of Gastonia, N.C., passed away June 21, 2020. He was born on June 7, 1929 in Hutchinson, Kansas, a son of the late Stewart Swartzell and Irene Showalter Swartzell. Dean was a retired transportation supervisor of General Telephone Company, now known as Verizon. He served in the United States Army and was a member of Jones Chapel United Methodist Church in Athens, TN and recently attended Sandy Plains Baptist Church in Gastonia. Dean is survived by his daughters, Lori Adams (Todd) of Gastonia, N.C., Leslye Beria (Bert) of Athens, Glenda Roach (Rudy) of Houston, Texas, Patty Siler (Jim) of Lakewood, Calif., Sheryl Talley (Roger), and Valerie Wright, all of Lavaca, Ark.; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. There will be a celebration of life on July 18 at 11 a.m. at Jones Chapel United Methodist Church in Athens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
