Royce Douglas “Doug” Fugate, 59, of Calhoun, went to his eternal home after a lengthy battle with cancer on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2019, with his wife, Carmen, by his side. Doug was born on Aug. 6, 1960, and graduated from Calhoun High School in 1978. He was of the Baptist faith. Along with his love for his family and his friends, he enjoyed life to the fullest and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gordon and Margaret Grisham Fugate; sister, Patricia Richesin; and brother, Jerry Fugate. Survivors include his loving wife of 36 years, Carmen Hammonds Fugate; daughter, Chelsea (Andy) Jones; son, Parker Fugate and his fiancée, Morgan Elrod; grandson, Reid Jones, whom was his joy; two brothers, Beauford (Kathy) Fugate of Riceville, and Bobby (Caroline) Fugate of Calhoun; two sisters, Della (Phil) Liner of Charleston, and Loretta (Kenny) Purdie of Athens; sister-in law, Regina Fugate of Houston, Texas; and several nieces and nephews. Doug retired from Olin Corp. in 2016 after working 37 years. He was owner of Fugate’s Firearms. A special thanks to Carrie and Sandra, our Hospice nurses, for their great care. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 16, at Sanford Baptist Church, located at 2283 County Road 50 in Riceville. A service to celebrate Doug’s life will follow at 7 p.m. with Stanley Hammonds and Kenny Purdie officiating. Graveside services will be Tuesday, Sept. 17, at 11 a.m. in Calhoun Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Beauford Fugate, Bobby Fugate, David Firestone, Tony Beard, Eddie Geren and Coy Harbison.
