Rual B. Johnson, 89, of Etowah, passed away Monday, Dec. 9, 2019. He was a son of the late Lester and Barton Grace Johnson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah B. Johnson; son, Bart R. Johnson; and daughter, Jennifer Van Donkelaar. Rual was a Shriner and a Mason, served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict, and was a member of the 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment. He worked as a yard master for CSX Railroad for many years, was an avid bowler and loved UT college football. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Melanee Johnson of Etowah; grandchildren, Christina Kilburn of Nashville, Matthew Johnson of Etowah, Jessica Johnson of Etowah, Tyler Johnson of Etowah, Bobby Van Donkelaar of Etowah, Allison Van Donkelaar of Knoxville, Ashley Van Donkelaar of Charlotte, Holly Lugo of Asheville, Christiaan Van Donkelaar of Nashville, and Ryan Johnson of Etowah; and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 12, in the chapel of Bordwine Funeral Home with the Rev. Jack Bryan officiating. Family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday prior to the service. Family and friends will assemble at 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 13, at the funeral home and proceed to Coghill Cemetery for the 11 a.m. committal service with military honors.
