Larry Fleming, 75, one of this area’s most respected sports writers, passed away Friday, Nov. 1, 2019, at his home following a brief illness. A native of Athens, Larry began his career with The Daily Post-Athenian and later became a sports writer for the Chattanooga Times, spanning 31 years of service. Larry was the beat writer for Tennessee football and basketball, as well as the Chattanooga Lookouts. He was inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame and Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame, as well as being named Tennessee Sports Writer of the Year in 1987. He was a Heisman Trophy voter for many years. After his years with the News-Free Press and Times, he became sports editor of the Dalton Daily Citizen-News, where he covered high school sports all across North Georgia. Since 2011, Larry has been a writer for the covering Tennessee football, volleyball, baseball and softball. Larry was highly respected by all area high school coaches from Knoxville, Athens, Chattanooga and North Georgia area schools. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Geneva Fleming; daughter, Karen; and brother, Mike. Larry is survived by his wife of 55 years, Donna; son, Dustin (Liz) Flemings; and two grandchildren, Austin and Madi Fleming. There will be a private family service at Larry’s request.
