Local students honored for essays

Winners of the DAR American History Essay Contest were honored at a tea at the McMinn County Courthouse on Saturday, Feb. 8. The students were to write an essay titled “The Voyage of the Mayflower,” marking the 400th anniversary of the voyage. They were to imagine they were one of the passengers on the Mayflower and how they would need to prepare for the voyage and a new life in the wilderness once they arrived. Shown here are (front row, from left) Inez Leger, 7th grade; Skylar Bright, 6th grade; and Luke Carroll, 5th grade. All three students are from Etowah City School. Shown here on the back row are (from left) Tennessee State Rep. Mark Cochran; Tyler Boyd, great grandnephew of Harry T. Burn and author of the book “Tennessee Statesman Harry T. Burn: Woman Suffrage, Free elections and a Life of Service;” and Teresa Littleton, Alexander Keith chapter regent. Cochran and Boyd both spoke to the attendees and presented awards.
