DECATUR - Meigs County grew up this year and it showed. The Tigers fell behind early in their District 5-AA tournament elimination game against rival McMinn Central Monday, but came back to win 14 to 5. |

Central, Meigs softball teams advance in 5-AA
Meigs County and McMinn Central will meet in the winner's bracket finals of the District 5-AA softball tournament in Decatur today with game time at 6 p.m. The fact regular-season champion Meigs County advanced with a 5-0 win over Sweetwater was not unexpected, but Central's appearance is a mild surprise after the third-seeded Chargerettes knocked off second-seeded Polk County, 4-2, in Benton. |

Bulldogs claim AAC playoff title
KINGSPORT - Tennessee Wesleyan College had to work overtime on Friday, but the long hours paid big dividends. With a 5-3 victory over Union College in 10 innings, the Bulldogs added the Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament crown to their regular season title; clinched a top seed for one of nine five-team region brackets in the NAIA national playoffs; will now return to the familiar surroundings of Hunter-Wright Stadium for the playoffs and tied the school record for single-season wins with 46. |

Chargers win, then lose
In Friday's play-in game to the District 5-AA tournament, fourth-seeded McMinn Central escaped with a 15-9 victory over last-place Sweetwater, advancing to the double-elimination round. The reprieve, however, didn't last long. Following a 14-1 setback at regular season champion Sequoyah on Saturday, the Chargers now find themselves on the brink of a season-ending loss when they play at Meigs County today, starting at 5 p.m. |

For the second consecutive and fifth time in seven years, a pair of familiar faces will square off for the Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament title with the league's automatic bid to the NAIA national playoffs at stake. After completing unbeaten runs through pool play in the double-elimination portion of the tournament, Tennessee Wesleyan College (45-11) and Union College (35-20) will meet today in a winner-take-all championship game at Hunter-Wright Stadium, starting at 1:30 p.m. |

'Dogs drub Buffs
KINGSPORT - Tennessee Wesleyan College won on the field Thursday in the second round of the Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament being held at Hunter-Wright Stadium. Wesleyan followed up Tuesday's 16-3 decision over Virginia Intermont by pounding Milligan College, 15-4, but lost AAC Pitcher of the Year of the Year Jeremy Fitzgerald to a pitching-hand injury when the junior righthander collided with teammate Jake Stone while trying to make a play in the game. |

Tribe celebrates season
As Keith Elliott called McMinn County High School varsity basketball players to the front of the room to be recognized at the team's banquet last Wednesday night, he observed that they've been part of a three-year run which has produced 61 victories - 19 in the 2009-10 season, 24 the following year and 18 this past season. |

Big inning gives Meigs victory over McMinn
DECATUR - Meigs County defeated McMinn County Tuesday, 5-1, to earn the season sweep. The Lady Tigers, fell behind 1-0 early in top of the fourth, but roared back with five runs in the bottom of the inning. Other than the fourth inning, neither team showed much offensive punch, something Meigs Coach Jeff Davis commented on. |
