Gary L. Mason, 65, of the Mt. Harmony community near Niota, died Sunday morning, Dec. 22, 2013, at his residence.
He was a lifelong resident of McMinn County. A graduate of McMinn County High School Class of 1966, he attended East Tennessee State University for two years. He was a member of Mt. Harmony Baptist Church, where he was the longest serving deacon. He was ordained July 1978 and was baptized Aug. 1959. He was a former founding director of SouthEast Bank & Trust. He had served on the McMinn County Commission since 1994. He was a member of Meridian Sun Lodge #50 F&AM and also had served on the Valley Farmers Cooperative Board of Directors. He was a well-known dairy farmer in the Mt. Harmony community, where he was very active in agriculture circles. Gary, a fourth generation dairy farmer, and his wife, Janette, had operated Harmony Way Dairy Farm, a Century Farm, since 1978. He was named the Farmer of the Year in 1989. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Janette Pickel Mason of Niota; one daughter and son-in-law, Shelby and Jake Roberts of Lebanon; one son and daughter-in-law, Matthew Gary and Sallie Dugan Mason of Niota; his mother and father, RJ and Pauline Roberson Mason of Niota; one granddaughter, Allie Jane Mason; two grandsons, Riley Jacob Mason and Ryder Jacob Roberts; and one brother and sister-in-law, Roy E. and Doris Mason of Niota.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 24, at Mt. Harmony Baptist Church in Niota with the Rev. Stanley Hammonds officiating.
Interment will follow in Mt. Harmony Cemetery with military honors at the graveside provided by the U.S. Air Force.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 23, at Mt. Harmony Baptist Church of Niota.
Pallbearers will be Mark Lowry, Mike Lowry, Joel Sherlin, Steve Smith, F. Stephen Miller, John Gentry, Bill Datz, Don Frank and Roy Frank. Honorary pallbearers will be deacons of Mt. Harmory Church and McMinn County Commissioners.
