Lewis Taylor McAlister, 93, of Decatur, went to be with our Lord on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013, at his residence.
He was a native of McMinn County and longtime resident of Decatur and former resident of Grand Rapids, Mich.
He was a son of the late James and Maggie Brown McAlister, and was also preceded in death by his grandparents; an infant daughter, Betty Ann McAlister; his first wife, Lori McAlister; a son-in-law, Jimmy Foster; three sisters, Ruth Fincher, Dora Russell and Jean McAlister; three brothers, Harold McAlister, Audie McAlister, and Burt McAlister.
He was a hard-working, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and dear friend to many. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran who proudly served his country and protected our country\'s freedom.
He was associated with Spartan Food Distributors in Grand Rapids, Mich., until his retirement, and was a member of Union Grove Baptist Church in Decatur.
Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Reba Jean McAlister of Decatur; one daughter and son-in-law, Allie Patricia and Bill Keller of Nashville; stepson and stepdaughter, Allen and Vicki Staggs of Colorado Springs, Colo.; stepdaughters and stepsons, Theresa and Troy Caldwell of Decatur, Sheila and Ricky Standridge of Decatur, and Melinda Sneed of Decatur; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and so many special extended family and friends.
Funeral services will be 7 p.m. on Monday in the chapel of Ziegler Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike Rymer officiating. Entombment will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in Mountain View Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
Pallbearers will be Troy Caldwell, Ricky Standridge, Chris Standridge, Walt Ramsey, Cody Bivens, and Grady Staggs. Honorary pallbearers will be Bradley Sneed, Tony Diaz, Justin Staggs, Ryan Staggs, and Jimmy Foster.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Amedisys Hospice in Athens; The Veteran\'s Association; The Cancer Foundation; or to the Alzheimer\'s Association.
The family of Lewis McAlister will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Ziegler Funeral Home.
