Mary Ruth Buckner, 75, of Athens, passed away Thursday, Oct. 24, 2013, at her residence.
A native of Campbell County and resident of McMinn County most of her life, she was a daughter of the late Jess and Margaret \"Maggie\" Stanford Longmire, and was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas \"Tom\" Rueben Buckner Jr., on Feb. 3, 2009.
She was a former employee with the Monroe County School System as a teacher, a former teacher at Hiwassee College and had been a mentor to many students.
A cancer survivor, she was active in the McMinn Senior Activity Center and she loved to bowl.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Thomas \"Tommy\" and Connie Buckner of Athens; three daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Billy Kinzer of Sweetwater, Sherri Tice of Athens, and Terri and Bill Rutledge of Grapevine, Texas; two brothers and sister-in-law, Jess Longmire and David and Robin Longmire, all of LaFollette; three sisters, Trula and Dale Byington of Salem, Va., and Eula Henry and Ann McGhee, both of LaFollette; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a very special friend, Shazzon Bradley.
Funeral services were 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, in the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home with the Rev. Oran Creasman officiating.
Graveside services were 11 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 27, at McMinn Memory Gardens.
Active pallbearers were Caleb Chouinard, Logan Chouinard, Robbie Tice, John Tice, Bill Rutledge, and Keith McLemore.
The family received friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday prior to the service at the funeral home.
