Wilburn \"Hoot\" McDonald, 80, of Athens, won his battle over lung cancer on Monday, Sept. 9, 2013, at his home.
He was a son of the late Tillman and Rena Walker McDonald. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Roy Lee, H.L., and Albert McDonald; one sister, Barbara Wilson; and one half-sister, Zella Mae McKheen.
He was a member of West End Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon for more than 30 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and was a member of the Tennessee Army National Guard. He had served with the McMinn County Sheriff\'s Department in the early 1970s and was retired from the Athens Fire Department. \"Hoot\" loved people and enjoyed helping others in their time of need while working part-time at Ziegler Funeral Home. One of his favorite sayings was, \"If you need me... I\'ll call you.\"
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Arula Monroe McDonald of Athens; one daughter and son-in-law, Sheila and Robert Wendell Patterson of Athens; one son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Barb McDonald of Englewood; two granddaughters, Angela and Chris Coleman of Athens, and Bridgette Renae and Terry Campbell of Athens; six great-grandchildren, Cassandra, Chelsea, and Christian Coleman, and Mariah, Olivia, and Brendon Campbell, all of Athens; three sisters, Mary Lou Conn of Tullahoma, Joyce and Homer Shelton of Athens, and Linda and Butch Wheaton of Riceville; two brothers, Lewis McDonald of Athens, and J.C. and Birdie McDonald of Athens; sister-in-law, Pat McDonald of Athens; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family would like to say a special thank you to Dr. Joe Holiday and family, Dr. Johnnie Carter and the staff of Amedisys Hospice and the family of Ziegler Funeral Home.
A celebration of Hoot\'s life service will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at West End Baptist Church with the Rev. Herman Jordan, the Rev. Jimmy Price and the Rev. Jack Scallions officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Kenny Charles, Greg Charles, Andy Stephens, Steve Powell, Frankie Richesin, Larry Howard, Johnny Hyde and Denny Charles. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Athens Fire Department.
The family of Wilburn \"Hoot\" McDonald will receive friends from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Ziegler Funeral Home.
