Kenneth Ray \"Kent\" Scruggs, 73, of Athens, passed away Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013, at his residence.
He was a graduate of J.L. Cook High School in 1960, where he played football. He continued his education at the Tennessee Technology Center and graduated in 1969 as a certified welder. He was a member of Mount Cumberland Presbyterian Church in America in Sweetwater, where he served as a deacon and assisted with Sunday school.
He was a son of the late Ross Cexton and Sally Mae Scruggs. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Robert Lee, James Edward, Charles Owen and Raymond Olie Scruggs; one infant grandson, James Allen Arnwine; and one infant great-granddaughter, Ziona Denise Roberts.
Survivors include wife, Helen Louise Macon Scruggs of Athens; one sister, Betty Ann Scruggs of Athens; two daughters, Auderea (Jan C.) Armstrong of Cleveland, and Laquisha (Duncan) Wolfe of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada; three sons, Norman (Charity) Macon of Sweetwater, and Wesley and Tracy of Athens; one sister-in-law, Charlene Scruggs of Athens; two aunts, Virginia Wynn of Knoxville, and Ora Scruggs of Niota; one uncle, Caggie Scruggs of Athens; 19 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Saturday, Sept. 7, at 2 p.m. at Mount Cumberland Presbyterian Church in America in Sweetwater with the Rev. Perry Jackson and the Rev. Eric Jones officiating.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church from 1 to 2 p.m.
Interment will follow in Hammonds Cemetery in Athens.
