James C. \"J.C.\" Newman, 88, of Maryville, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, at Blount Memorial Hospital.
A proud World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Army, Company A, 379th Infantry, 95th Division. He was awarded two Bronze Stars, the Combat Infantry Badge and the Purple Heart.
In 2011, he was also awarded the French Legion of Honor Medal, France\'s highest honor, for his participation in the liberation of France and Europe. He was a member, former deacon and Sunday school director of Forest Hill Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his son, Steve Newman; parents, James H. and Annie Newman; and sisters, Wilma Dean White and Eva Sue Carroll.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Wilva Newman; daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Ron Teffeteller; daughter, Mary Newman; daughter-in-law, Sonya Newman; grandchildren, Lori Teffeteller, Kelly Teffeteller, Josh Newman and wife, Angela, Jessica Long and husband, Ronnie, and Jordan Newman; great-granddaughter, Alivia Newman; brother, Dwayne Newman; and a host of nieces, nephews and many friends.
The funeral service will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. George Macht and the Rev. Gary Thomas officiating.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Interment will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Grandview Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Forest Hill Baptist Church Building Fund, 1850 Forest Hill Rd., Maryville, TN 37803.
