David Michael \"Mike\" Long, 58, of Athens, passed away on Monday Aug. 26, 2013, at his home.
He was born to the union of Robert E. Long Sr. (deceased) and Minnie Marie Smith-Long on Sept. 3, 1954. He attended J.L. Cook Elementary School and was a graduate of McMinn County High School. He attended Tennessee State University and Cleveland State Community College.
He was an avid sports enthusiast, which included playing baseball, football, and swimming. He was also an outdoorsman. \"Mike\" was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy on the 12th day of May 1977. He worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority as a general laborer, at Mayfield Dairy and was a jailer for Athens City. He also worked for Morrison\'s Cafeteria at Tennessee Wesleyan College.
He is survived by his loving mother, Minnie Marie Long of Athens; three brothers, Robert (Bobby) E. Long Jr. (Susan) of Cleveland, Robert Bradley of Atlanta, Ga., and Paul Gaffney (Liska) of Chattanooga; two sisters, Gloria M. Versa (Lawrence) and Kathy L. Arnwine (Donnie) of Cleveland; eight nieces, Shere Fritz (Julius), Kyone Arnwine, Asata Jones (Russell), Natosha Versa, Shuderra Versa, Yaquia Walker (Frank), Elyssia Gaffney and Kyla Long; seven nephews, Jubreel Versa (Pasha), Jay McMahan, Yashan Long, Anthony Long, Jamille Brown, Eric Brown and Evan Gaffney; great-nieces and -nephews, Quintin and Miles Versa, Alsatia Smith, Alycia and Trey Jones, Jayla and Jolie McMahan, Mikoya Bradley, Riley Brown, Kaemon Brown, Shalena Brown, CJ, Katie and Cole Fritz, Chase, Payten and J. Pierce Walker; as well as devoted aunts and uncles, Lottie Moore of Buffalo, N.Y., Robert and Mattie McCowan of Athens, James and Bertha Smith of Buffalo, N.Y., Chester T. Smith, Burkett Witt and W.R. Prigmore, all of Athens; and numerous cousins and friends. \"Mike\" had several very special friends, but a few we\'d like to mention, William Roy McBee and James Ed Martin, of Athens, and Russell Johnson, of Nashville.
Thank you all for every phone call and visit. It meant a lot to him and also to his family.
Funeral services will be Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, at 11:30 a.m. in the chapel of M.D. Dotson & Sons Funeral Home with pastor Harold McCowan officiating.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the funeral home from 11 to 11:30 a.m.
Interment will follow at Hammonds Cemetery in Athens.
