Ivan Jerel \"Cato\" Cates, 38, of Virginia Beach, Va., died Tuesday morning, May 7, 2013, at Santera Leigh Hospital in Norfolk, Va.
He was a native of Etowah, and a son of Linda and the late William Cates. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Edward and Elsie Mooney and James and Virginia Cates.
He was a member of Harwell Chapel Church of Etowah and, in 1993, he graduated with honors from McMinn Central High School. In 1998, he graduated from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville with a degree in electrical engineering. He entered the U.S. Navy in 2000 as an E6 Petty Officer 1st Class. He was a nuclear electrician\'s mate.
Survivors include his wife, Angel Cates; one son, Jerel Cates of Virginia Beach, Va.; one daughter, Yasmeen Brown of Athens; one granddaughter, Ja\'Zara Barker of Athens; his devoted mother, Linda Cates of Etowah; one brother and sister-in-law, Edwin and Tracy Cates of LaVergne; one brother-in-law, Lenny Jennette of Florida; two nephews, Xavier Cates of LaVergne, and Jase Clark of Nashville; several devoted aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends; a very special friend, Barbara Jennette of Virginia Beach, Va.; and his many naval buddies.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Harwell Chapel Church with the Rev. Gale Hendrick and the Rev. Roderick Rose officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery in Etowah with military honors.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at the church.
