Rev. Claude R. Irons, 75, of Niota, died Sunday, April 21, 2013, at his residence.
A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late William \"Leck\" and Gussie Raper Irons, and was preceded in death by one brother, Hoyt Irons.
A member of Old Pond Hill Baptist Church, he was ordained as a minister on Aug. 18, 1965, and had served as a former pastor of Shelton\'s Grove Baptist Church, Rogers Creek Baptist Church for two terms and Rocky Mount Baptist Church.
Prior to his passing, he was a volunteer with Christian Builders. During his Christian walk with the Lord, he volunteered as a choir director, Sunday school teacher and participated with many foreign and home mission projects.
He was retired from AUB after 33 years of service as a water supervisor. He loved being a servant to the community, providing vegetables from his garden, wood for winter and visiting the sick and elderly.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Sybol Price Irons of Niota; his children and their spouses, Revonda and David Webb of Niota, Rick and Rhonda Irons of White, Ga., Keith and Melinda Irons of Rydal, Ga., the Rev. Randy and Karla Irons of Loudon, and Ginger Irons of Niota; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill and Barbara Irons and Mike and Linda Irons, all of Niota, and the Rev. J.W. and Jane Irons of Athens; two sisters, Carolyn Simpson of Rock Springs, Ga., and Andra Dockery of Chickamauga, Ga.; his grandchildren, Paul Webb and his wife, Alicia, Lincoln Irons and his wife, Kerrian, Dallas Fitzpatrick and her husband, Tom, Kaitlin Norton and her husband, Ben, Wes Irons, Shane Irons, Austin Irons, Sydney Irons and Ben Irons; and his great-grandchildren, Abram, Sophia, Harper and Henry and coming soon, Tatem.
Funeral services will be 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home with the Rev. Stanley Hammonds and the Rev. Myrl K. Vaughn officiating. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Pond Hill Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be grandsons Paul Webb, Lincoln Irons, Wes Irons, Shane Irons, Austin Irons and Ben Irons.
The family will receive friends from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
