Betty Thomson, 78, of Etowah, died Saturday, March 30, 2013, at Woods Memorial Hospital.
A native of Greenback, she lived in Etowah for more than 40 years. She was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church, enjoyed listening to gospel music and was an avid cook.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Katie Shadden Hipps; one sister, Margaret Longmire; and two brothers, Bud and James Hipps.
Survivors include her loving husband of 46 1/2 years, Jay Thomson; two sons, Gary Walker and his wife, Karen, of Etowah, and Robert \"Wes\" Thomson and his wife, Connie, of Great Falls, Mont.; four grandchildren, Stephanie Farmer and her husband, Travis, of Athens, Katie Johnson and her husband, Dennis, of Etowah, Chris Walker of Athens, and Ashley Walker of Etowah; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Earl Hipps of Maryville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Serenity Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark Hensley officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery in Greenback with current and former members of the Etowah Rescue Squad serving as active and honorary pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
The family suggest that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Betty\'s name to the Etowah Rescue Squad.
