Glen E. Thornton, 62, of Athens, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012, at Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville.
A native and lifelong resident of Athens, he was a son of the late Hubert Columbus and Elizabeth Barnes Thornton, and was preceded in death by two brothers, Michael Dewayne Thornton and Billy Eugene Thornton; and one sister, Lois Gaut.
He was a teacher in the Monroe County School System at Rural Vale Elementary School and Sweetwater High School, where he was the Key Club advisor and helped with the Math Competition. He managed both movie theaters in Athens for many years and had a lawn service.
Survivors include four sisters and brothers-in-law, Helen and Ted Greene of Riceville, Lucille and Lee Henry of Athens, Wanda and Maurice McKinney of Athens, and Gail and Spencer Roper of Riceville; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Larry and Wilma Thornton of Athens, and Kenneth \"Kenny\" and Rita Thornton of Etowah; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home with Kenny Thornton officiating. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Friday at McMinn Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Randy Gaut, Jerry Hodges, Mark McKinney, George Ledford, Doug Ledford, Ryan Ledford and Mitch Smallwood.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday prior to the service at the funeral home.
