Vesta Elizabeth Hughes Martin, 97, passed away Friday, Dec. 14, 2012, at a local healthcare facility.
She was born in McMinn County and moved with her husband to Asheville, N.C., and resided there a few years before returning and spending the rest of her life home in McMinn County. She was a member of Inanda Baptist Church in Asheville, N.C. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Martin, in 1994; and also her parents, Phillip and Nellie Stanton Hughes; sisters, Della Fortner and Effie Roberts; and brothers, Clifford Hughes, Arvil Hughes and Clyde Hughes.
Survivors include her daughter, Nancy Jean Wilson and husband, Jim, of Athens; son, James R. \"Butch\" Martin and wife, Nancy, of Benton; granddaughters, Jamie King and husband, Ed, of Athens, Trescy Lee and husband, William \"Tick,\" of Benton; great-grandchildren, T.K. King of Athens, and Tiffany Lee and Tyler Lee, both of Benton; brother, Dorton Hughes of Ohio; and sister-in-law, Jean Hughes of Clearwater, Fla.
A graveside service was held at noon Monday at McMinn Memory Gardens with Dr. Shane Arnold and Dr. Glen Gregg officiating. A white dove release ceremony concluded the service.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Gideons International
Ralph Buckner Funeral Home of Etowah was in charge of arrangements.
