Edna Hicks Miller, 91, of Athens, passed away Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012, at NHC Healthcare of Athens.
A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, she was a daughter of the late John Wesley \"J.W.\" and Eliza Jane Wattenbarger Hicks, and was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Arthur \"Andy\" Miller, on May 16, 1972; and a brother, Roy Hicks, on May 26, 2007.
She was a member of the Methodist Church and attended Keith Memorial United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, and had been a former member of the Quilting Center and Knitting Class. She was a former piano teacher, also taught accordion lessons, and loved doing crafts.
She retired from the McMinn County School System after 40 years of teaching, of which 25 years was at McMinn County High School. She was a former teacher in the Athens City Schools and formerly taught at Riceville Grammar School. After retiring she was a volunteer teacher.
She received her Bachelor of Science and Master of Education degrees from the University of Tenessee, and completed two more years toward her Doctorate degree. She started the Vocational Improvement Program at McMinn County High School.
Survivors include one son, George A. Miller; a devoted niece and caregiver, Doris Graham and her husband, Henry, of Niota; and several other nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 7 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home with the Rev. Albert Gentry and the Rev. Myrl Vaughn officiating. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Buttrams Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Doug Gentry, Edward Pitcock, Dustin Pitcock, Josh Prock, John Harris and K. Bobby Dennis. Henry Graham will be an honorary pallbearer.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home prior to the service. Those unable to attend may send condolences to www.laycock-hobbs.com
