Willard Arnold Harrod, 81, of Athens, died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2012, at Life Care Center of Athens.
He was a native and lifelong resident of McMinn County and was a son of the late Loyd and Maude Lenice Starr Harrod. He was preceded in death by one brother, Edward Lewis \"Ed\" Harrod.
Arnold, or \"Slick\" as he was known to many, lived a full life. He was first and foremost a follower of Jesus Christ and a member of Clearwater Baptist Church. He was a faithful witness to the gospel of Jesus Christ and led many to faith in the Lord. He served the Lord as a Sunday school teacher, deacon and church treasurer for more than 25 years.
He started to work at a young age at his fathers\'s sawmill. He also served his country in the U.S. Air Force. Upon his return from the Air Force, he worked diligently to become a registered licensed civil engineer for the State of Tennessee.
After working for many years as an engineer, he ran for public office and became the first elected Highway Commissioner of McMinn County. After serving as the Highway Commissioner, he became the superintendant of Water and Waste Water at the Athens Utilities Board. He decided to retire early, but he did not stop working. Rather, he fulfilled a lifelong dream and became owner/operator of his own semi-truck. He loved driving and enjoyed telling of his adventures on the road.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Imogene Walker Harrod of Athens; two sons and daughters-in-law, Doug and Tammy Harrod of Cleveland, and the Rev. Mark and Jodie Harrod of Johnson City; five grandchildren, Andrew, Katelyn, Sue Ellen, Emma and Samuel Harrod; one brother and sister-in-law, Dillard and Helen Harrod of Knoxville; one sister, Glenora Revis of Athens; one sister-in-law, Eula Harrod of Athens; and several nieces and nephews.
