Rachel Melton Mahoney, 88, of Riceville, died Tuesday morning, Nov. 6, 2012, at NHC Health Care of Athens.
A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, she was a daughter of the late Marshall and Lucy Key Melton and was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Garrett Harding \"Bud\" Mahoney; an infant son, Dewey Mahoney; and four sisters, Ruby Hammonds, Martha Heath, Alice Calk and Wanda Decker. She was a longtime member of Riceville United Methodist Church, where she taught the Adult Sunday School class up to the time of her sickness, and was a member of the church choir. She was also remembered for having not missed a church service for 13 years.
Survivors include two daughters, Joyce Leamon and her husband, Richard, of Riceville, and Sandra Mahoney and her husband, Marty Stinnett, of Cleveland; two sons, Bob Mahoney and his wife, Deloris, of Athens, and Gary Mahoney and his wife, Christy, of Knoxville; six grandchildren, Debbie Loftis and her husband, Harry, of Riceville, Angie Carson and her husband, Matt, of Cleveland, Heather Mahoney Houser and her husband, Ray, and Scott Leamon and his wife, Rhonda, all of Athens, Ryan Mahoney and his wife, Heather, of Knoxville, and Brent Mahoney and his wife, Leslie, of Ooltewah; seven great-grandchildren, Jeremy Loftis and his wife, Kylie, Joel Loftis and his fiancée, Traci Young, Dylan Leamon, Rachel Leamon, Laurie Carson, Abby Mahoney and Natalie Mahoney; and several special nieces and nephews.
The family would like to give a special thanks to the dear people who served as caregivers: Gail Womac, Lisa Martin, Elsie Gentry and Chuck Whittemore, and also a special thanks to the NHC and ARMC staff, Amedysis Home Healthcare, Dr. David Byrd and Dr. Jenny Byrd.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Ziegler Funeral Home with Jim Lackey officiating. Burial will follow in McMinn Memory Gardens.
Grandsons and great-grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
