Don L. Kirksey, 81, of Athens, died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012, at Athens Regional Medical Center.



A native of Etowah and a resident of Athens for most of his life, he was a son of the late Charles Allen and Minnie Burger Kirksey, and was preceded in death by his wife, Emma Jean Brakebill Kirksey, on Jan. 16, 1987; one grandson, Braden Fetzer; and one step-grandson, John Virgil Davis.



He was a Christian and was a member of Athens Church of Christ. He was a former employee of Mayfield\'s, having worked there for 23 years, and was retired from TVA. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army National Guard.



Survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law, Linda Kirksey of Athens, and Sandy K. and Steve Davis of Ten Mile; three grandchildren, Matt Lunsford, Cayci Moses and Kelsie Fetzer; one great-grandchild, Kendall Fetzer; three step-grandchildren, Amy Skorupan, Paul Davis and Nikki Davis; and several nieces and nephews.



The family would like to express a special thank you to Dr. David L. Byrd and the staff of Athens Regional Medical Center for their care and concern of our loved one.



Funeral services will be 7 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home with Ministers Travis Irwin and Mark Littleton officiating. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Friday at McMinn Memory Gardens.



Active pallbearers will be Glen Kirksey, Bryan Conner, Bill Chimley, Tracy Kirksey, Jamie Kirksey, David Kirksey and Jimmy Kirksey.



The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.



Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice.
