Richard Hyde, 91, of Cleveland, died early Tuesday morning, Oct. 2, 2012, in a local hospital.



He was a son of the late Bertha Hill Hyde and Jim Hyde, and was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie Swafford Hyde; one son, Ronnie Hyde; one sister, Louise Farmer; and one brother, Lewis Hyde.



He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the Military Police during World War II. He received the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Medal, five Overseas Service Bars and the Meritorious Unit Award.



He was a retired chef working in a steak house in Cleveland, Ohio. He also served as deacon and Sunday school teacher in his Baptist church in Cleveland, Ohio. He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church, where he loved attending until his health started failing.



Survivors include two grandchildren, Yvonne Goins and Aaron Hyde; three great-grandchildren; one brother, James Hyde Jr. and his wife, Shirley, of Cleveland; sisters, Geraldine Hines and her husband, Bill, and Myrtle Harris, all of Cleveland, Jeanette Thompson and her husband, Beecher, of Loudon, Inez Harris of Etowah, Imogene Firestone and her husband, Wilber, of Athens, and Eva Nell Reese and her husband, Edward, of Riceville; his special friend, Bert Corbin of Cleveland; and several nieces and nephews.



The Remembrance of Life Service will be 7 p.m. Thursday in the Wildwood Chapel of Jim Rush Funeral Home with Pastor Rusty Langford officiating. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Friday in Brock Cemetery in Polk County with deacons of Macedonia Baptist Church serving as pallbearers. Military honors will be given.



The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
