Virginia Carolyn Coker, 74, of Athens, entered into the Kingdom of God on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012, at her residence.



A native of Louisville, Ky., and a resident of Athens since 1958, she was a daughter of the late Shermal Lamar Singleton and Mary Briggs Singleton Green, and was preceded in death by two brothers, George W. Singleton and Arthur F. Singleton; and her stepfather, A.C. Green.



She graduated in 1958 with an Associate of Arts degree from Campbellsville University; from Tennessee Wesleyan College in 1972 with a Bachelor of Science degree; and from the University of Tennessee in 1981 with a Master of Science degree.



A teacher for the McMinn County School System for 37 years, she also served on numerous local, district and state committees. She was of the Baptist faith.



Survivors include three daughters and one son-in-law, Cathy Brown, Connie Wyatt and Carla and Allen Jones, all of Athens; six half-brothers, Allen Green, John Green, Rick Green, Russ Green and Chuck Green, all of Houston, Texas, and Dan Green of Phoenix, Ariz.; grandchildren and their spouses, Jeremy and Lindsay Brown of San Antonio, Texas, Joey and Brie Brown of Riceville, and Amber and Clay Moore, Allison and Eric Gibson, Corey Jones and Chris Wyatt, all of Athens; seven great-grandchildren, Lynzie Gibson, Jayden Brown, Kaden Brown, Landon Brown, Lilly Brown, Kyla Moore and Katie Moore; and her former spouse, Bob Coker of Winston-Salem, N.C.



The family would like to express a special thank you to Home Health Care of East Tennessee, Inc., and Hospice; and Dr. William Harvey and staff.



Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home with the Rev. Oran Creasman officiating. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in McMinn Memory Gardens.



Active pallbearers will be Joey Brown, Chris Wyatt, Clay Moore, Corey Jones, Eric Gibson and Allen Jones.



The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.



Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Faye Forgety, 120 County Rd. 447, Athens, TN 37303.
