William Thurman, 74, of Decatur, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday morning, Sept. 25, 2012, at Athens Regional Medical Center.



A native of Meigs County and a longtime resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late Lon and Dollie Howard Thurman, and was preceded in death by four sisters, Janie Wilson, Betty Brodgen, Osie Thurman and Irene Bates; and three brothers, Robert, Wesley and Lige Thurman.



He was a member of Union Grove Baptist Church in Decatur. He was a logger and a former employee of Athens Hosiery Mills and Niota Hosiery Mill before retiring. He loved life, loved to rabbit hunt and fish, and also loved to spend time with his family and friends. He was always found doing things with his church.



He was a wonderful husband for 58 years and a great daddy and the best papaw in the world. He loved his wife, kids, grandkids and great-grandkids and will be greatly missed by his family, fishing buddies and friends every day.



Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Lois Clark Thurman of Decatur; two daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Joe Haney of Decatur, and Peggy and Kenny Hemphill of Athens; one son and daughter-in-law, William Carl and Shannon Thurman of Athens; four grandchildren, Tracy Thurman and his wife, Jennifer, Travis Thurman and his girlfriend, Beth Powell, Mandi Liner and her husband, Randy, and Courtney Wilkins and her husband, Cody; nine great-grandchildren, Makayla Thomas, Abby Thurman, Bailey Liner, Sierra Thurman, Gracie Thurman, Jaret Liner, Trenton Thurman, Maddie Thurman and Caiden Wilkins; and one brother and sister-in-law, J.W. \"Jay\" and Joy Thurman of Decatur.



Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Ziegler Funeral Home with the Rev. Jimmy Lewis and the Rev. Earl Graves officiating. Burial will be 11 a.m. Friday in Rogers Creek Cemetery.



Pallbearers will be Frank Barnes, Danny Blevins, Tim Howard, Darrell Swafford, Chris Clark, Jimmy Hawkins, Calvin Womac and Donnie Brodgen.



The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
