Robert C. Dorsey, 96, of Athens, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2012, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
A former resident of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., where he had lived for many years, and a resident of Athens for the past seven years, he was a son of the late Robert J. and Clara C. Dorsey, and was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Margaret \"Peggy\" Dorsey; and two nephews, Jerre Smith and Mark Smith.
He was a former employee with the State of Florida Health Department, where he retired early due to a disability from his time in the military. He was fondly remembered for his 12 years with the Civil Air Patrol of Florida, where he mentored a number of young people.
A veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in World War II, he was a member of the American Legion for more than 60 years, most recently at Post 68 in Athens. He was also a member of the DAV and VFW in Florida. He was a member of Keith Memorial United Methodist Church in Athens.
Survivors include one sister, Claris Smith; two nieces, Brenda Clanton and Holly Enten; several great-nephews and great-nieces; and two godchildren.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home with the Rev. Dennie Humphreys officiating. Graveside services will be held at Warren H. Smith Cemetery in Jacksonville Beach, Fla., at a later date.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
