Donald Charles \"Don\" Whitney

Donald Charles \"Don\" Whitney, 73, of Athens, died Friday, Sept. 14, 2012, at Athens Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.



A native of Cleveland, Ohio, former resident of St. Lucie County, Fla., and a resident of Athens since 2002, he was a son of the late Harold G. and Helen Crow Whitney, and was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Harry Darrell Landess.



He was a former employee of the St. Lucie County School System and of Athens Regional Medical Center. A veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the Korean Conflict, he was a member of the VFWs in St. Lucie, Fla., and Athens. He was an avid fisherman and football fan.



Survivors include his wife, Paula Kaye Whitney of Athens; one daughter and son-in-law, Doretta Kaye and Barry Striker of Athens; his mother-in-law, Carol Rees Landess of Athens; two grandchildren and one spouse, Kyle Lee and Ashley Striker and Ryan Kristopher Striker; and one great-granddaughter, Karlee Striker.



The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home.



Memorial contributions may be made to Amedisys Hospice, 614 N. Congress Pkwy., Athens, TN 37303.
