Nell Ruth Cunningham Hunter, 88 years, seven months and 13 days, of the Mount Verd community near Athens, went to Heaven on Friday, April 13, 2012, at the home of her daughter, Sandra Ross Russell.
A native of Athens, she was a daughter of the late Hubert C. Cunningham, who died in 1968, and the late Minnie Lou Snyder Cunningham, who passed away in 1939. She was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Hunter, on April 21, 1999; five sisters, Iva Teasley, Murtis Gruben, Ruby Fix, Mamie Gardner Johnson and Mandell Boggy; and two brothers, Snyder Cunningham and Jimmy Everett Cunningham.
In 1953, she left Athens and moved to the Cleveland, Ohio area, where she was employed with General Electric. After her retirement from General Electric, as an engineer technician, she returned to Athens in 1980. She was a member of Marshall Hill Baptist Church and had resided at Morning Pointe of Athens for the last four years.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Sandra Nell Ross Russell and her husband, Mack, of Athens; three grandsons, John Alan Ross and Bryan Ray Ross, both of Athens, and James Neal Ross of Niota; several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and special friends, Ada Rogers, Terri Monroe, Irene Dennis, Johnnie Hughes and Sue Hughes, all of Athens, and Theresa Kenesky of Lexington, Ky.
Funeral services were 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Ziegler Funeral Home with the Rev. Rick Ingram officiating. Burial followed in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Sandra Russell, John Ross, Jim Ross, Mark Burnett, Ted Monroe and Anthony Manis. Honorary pallbearers were Mack Russell, Bryan Ross and Jimmy Welch.
The family received friends from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the McMahan-Calvary Cemetery Preservation Fund, c/o BB&T Bank, 204 Washington Ave., Athens, TN 37303; or to the Union Hill Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 722, Athens, TN 37303.
