Donald Keith Elrod, 52, of Athens, died Wednesday, April 11, 2012, at his home after a long battle with cancer.
A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Ray and Nellie Johnson; his paternal grandparents, Jack and Willie Mae Elrod; and his stepfather, Vernon Finnell.
He was of the Baptist faith, was a graduate of McMinn County High School and was a former employee of Bowater, Mayfield and Black\'s Florist. He loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman.
Survivors include his mother, Sheila Johnson Finnell of Athens; his father and stepmother, Jerry and Mary Ann Elrod of Athens; one brother, David Eiche of Knoxville; and three stepbrothers and one spouse, Chad Finnell of Hixson, Brent and Christy Finnell of Pensacola, Fla., and David Boyd of Athens.
Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home with the Rev. Keith Whited officiating. Burial will be 11 a.m. Friday in McMinn Memory Gardens.
Active pallbearers will be Brook Johnson, Chad Sledge, Kenny Charles, Mark Walker, Greg Johnson, Andy Stephens and Tony Stephens.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
