Swann Burnett Boyer Jr., 79, of Winston-Salem, N.C., passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 10, 2012, surrounded by family at home.

He was born on July 4, 1932, in Athens to the late Swann Burnett Boyer Sr. and Reba Bayless Boyer. He graduated from McMinn County High School, attended the College of William & Mary in Virginia briefly and then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He served four years before being honorably discharged in 1955.

He graduated from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, where he earned a degree in industrial management. He moved to Winston-Salem in 1958, where he went to work for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company for 30 years before retiring in 1989. He was a member of the Winston-Salem Elks Lodge for 41 years, where he spent many afternoons playing cards.

An avid Wake Forest football fan, he also enjoyed playing golf and surf fishing. He also loved to entertain his many friends and family by cooking his \"famous\" BBQ chicken.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Peggy; and one son, Ken Bayless Boyer.

Survivors include one son, Dan Boyer and his wife, Dawn; and three grandchildren, Katie, Bailey and Charlie, all of Winston-Salem.

The family would like to express their gratitude to Hospice and Palliative Care Center and the many dear friends that supported Swann, especially to Ronda and Reg Fowler for their friendship, love and support, not only during recent weeks, but for all they have done over the years.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Hayworth Miller Funeral Home with Pastor Tony Brown officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
