George Wilburn Anderson

April 6, 2012

George Wilburn Anderson, 82, died Friday, April 6, 2012, at Life Care Center of Collegedale.

He had made Cleveland his home for more than 42 years, moving from the Athens area. A son of the late Gen. Carl A. Anderson Sr. and Nelle Ogle Anderson, he was also preceded in death by two brothers, Carl Anderson Jr. and infant brother Richard; and one sister, Nelle Stafford. He was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church of Cleveland and was a member of the Seekers Sunday School Class.

He served as a member of the National Guard, Headquarters Battery, 114 Anti-Aircraft Gun Battalion, at Knoxville. He was a school crossing guard at Georgetown and 20th Street. One Christmas, he dressed up as Santa and it caused quite a traffic congestion as the children left school and had to drive past him several times before going on home.

He was a model train enthusiast, having train shows to raise donations of cans of food for The Caring Place and the Emergency Pantry at Wesley Church. He was employed for several years by Universal Tire Company in Chattanooga. He was a Kmart greeter for many years until his health forced his retirement.

Survivors include his loving wife of 59 years, Dorothy Oliphant Anderson; one daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Charles Rowan of Mt. Juliet; one son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Teresa Anderson; one grandson, Ross Anderson; one granddaughter, Courtney Anderson; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Virginia Johnson of Newark, Del., and Betty and Bob Winchester of Columbus, Ohio; and a special \"adopted\" daughter, Lena Way Dyer of Augusta, Ga.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Riceville Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Ken Webb, Cecil Parkinson, John Daniel, Larry Brand, Jim Kirk and Tom Rowland. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Seekers Sunday School Class.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the church. The body will lie in repose one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, 3405 Peerless Rd. NW, Cleveland, TN 37312, for the building fund or the bell restoration fund.
