Verna Mae Swafford

Verna Mae Swafford, 87, of Athens, died Saturday, March 13, 2010, at her residence.

She was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher, served many years as a trustee, was in the choir and the missionary department, and was instrumental in the early renovations of the church. She was retired from Athens Products, and was a good neighbor and friend to many. She was preceded in death by three brothers; three sisters; and her husband, Paul Swafford Sr. From their union, three children survived.

Survivors include two daughters, Alma Porter of Athens, and Gloria Neil of Etowah; one son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Mary Swafford of Athens; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a devoted special daughter, Laura LeNoir of Athens; and a special friend, Richard Smith of Athens.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of M.D. Dotson & Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Kenneth Scaife delivering the eulogy. Burial will follow in Hammonds Cemetery in Athens.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
