190 years ago...
On February 27, 1819, a group of Cherokee Indians met with Secretary of War John C. Calhoun and signed a much negotiated land cession treaty. It became known as the Calhoun Treaty, and in the agreement the U. S. Federal Government bought from the Cherokee Indians all the land between Hiwassee, Little Tennessee and Big Tennessee Rivers lying west of Starr Mountain and the foothills of the Smokies. Quite suddenly, East Tennessee was opened for white settlement in what became known as the "Hiwassee Purchase." |

Guy receives Daughters of the Confederacy honor
Tellico Iron Works Chapter 2636, United Daughters of the Confederacy, presented a Judah P. Benjamin Award to Joe D. Guy at the Oct. 11 meeting of the McMinn County Historical Society. This is a very prestigious award given by the General Organization of the UDC for works done for the community in several areas. Guy was awarded for education and historical research in and around McMinn and Monroe counties. He is president of the McMinn County Historical Society. |
